The Annual Show

Our Annual Show is on Saturday 1st September at the Constable Hall, starting at 1pm.  This is our 117th Annual Show.

Classes are open to members and their children.  The children’s classes are also open to all children living or going to school in the village.  There are classes for all, including handicrafts, baking and photography as well as flowers and vegetables.  The closing date for entries is midday on the Thursday before the Show.  Please deliver the entry form (enclosed with the Schedule) to the Show Secretary by this date.  Only a few “grow to show” these days, and most of us wander round our gardens and allotments a few days before the closing date seeing what we have that we could enter.  So, DON’T BE SHY! Have a go and enter a few classes!  It’s good fun and it’s amazing how chuffed you can feel when you unexpectedly win a prize! The EBHS Annual Show is one of the longest-running in the UK – we believe it’s the second oldest.  So do come and be part of a long-standing village tradition.

We will also have refreshments to include drinks from the bar, tea, coffee and cake, hot dogs and ice cream.  There will be a Bouncy Castle and Slide for the children.  There may be other attractions – come along and see!

Last year's Annual Show took place on Saturday 3rd September 2011.  A full report with results can be found by following this link: 2011 Show

HINTS AND TIPS ON EXHIBITING AT THE ANNUAL SHOW

Here is a link to a document with detailed suggestions for exhibitors: Tips for Exhibitors

  1. Read your schedule carefully, checking any rules. Allow plenty of time for staging.
  2. On Show Morning, collect your entry cards from the Show Secretary’s Office at the venue.
  3. Make sure your entry cards are correct.  Put them by your entries with the name face down.
  4. Make your exhibits as attractive as possible.
  5. When the schedule asks for vegetables to be trimmed, 75mm leafstalks should remain and be tied neatly.  Cut peas and beans off at the vine with scissors leaving stalks attached. Cut tomatoes this way too, leaving the calyx (stalk) intact for showing.
  6. Beetroot should be round and of even size – 60mm to 75mm. Courgettes should be young and tender, 150mm long and approximately 35mm in diameter.  Courgettes may be shown with or without flowers.   Cucumbers may be shown with or without their flowers still attached.
  7. Prepare root vegetables by washing them carefully with a soft cloth to avoid damaging the surface.
  8. Exhibit soft fruit with stalks attached (currants in bunches).  Show plums and other fruits with their natural bloom left on and unpolished – unless otherwise stated in the schedule.
  9. Biggest isn’t always best!  Uniform size and colour is important too.

10. From time to time the RHS adjust their judging rules.  If you have any doubts about your entries, the Show Secretary Louise Kemp (01206 298122) has the latest RHS Show handbook and will be happy to help.

Good luck to all exhibitors - let’s all enjoy another great Show.
